Temperature Sensitive Product Notice: This product is made with ingredients that are temperature sensitive. In hot temperatures (warm-weather shipping, if left in the car, etc.) it may melt or change in texture and consistency. In the late spring, through summer and early fall, we recommend selecting our Temperature Sensitive Shipping option at checkout. For more information, see our FAQ on shipping and storing temperature-sensitive products.

Pictures show multiple items to illustrate size, shape, and variances in our handcrafted goods. Unless otherwise noted, all items sold individually.

New to natural? We’ve got you covered with our BYO Sampler Set!

First, select a full-sized half-round bar. You’ll love how perfectly shaped our bars are. They are less likely to slip out of your hand in the shower, and the “curved side down” storage on a soap dish extends the life of each bar.

Then, complete your kit with travel sizes of our other soaps, a Tooth Suds trial bar (yes, you can brush your teeth with soap), our much-loved shampoo bars, and a mini-tin of our skin-loving body butter.

To sweeten the deal, we’re going to send you a free wooden soap dish too!

FAQs

Body Butters

If the body butter you purchased contains essential oils, do not add more. We use recommended safe amounts of essential oils to our products, and adding more could cause harm to your beautiful skin and body.

If you love using your own essential oi blends, purchase the Pure Body Butter. It’s unscented, making it the perfect base for adding a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Just temper (instructions here) and add your favorite essential oil while whipping.

Temperature Sensitive Mailer
100% Compostable Insulated Mailing Inserts.

Products labeled with a temperature-sensitive notice are designed with ingredients that melt around body temperature. Especially in the summer months or in hot climates, these products can change in texture and consistency while in transit.

  • To protect your natural products in the early spring, through summer and late fall, select “Temperature Sensitive Shipping” at checkout. Your order will ship in our 100% compostable padded shipping insert.
  • If temperature-sensitive products arrive melted, we won’t be able to replace or refund them.
  • Once temperature-sensitive products arrive, keep in a cool spot away from direct sunlight.

For Body Butters, Lip Goods, and Salves:

If melting does happen, you can simply pop the product into the fridge to solidify and it will still be usable (though may not look as pretty!). In fact, we highly recommend that you put your products into the refrigerator or freezer prior to opening. This will help ensure that your products are solid, and will avoid spilling the melted product upon opening.

If your product was whipped, see our how to restore whipped body butter post.

For Hair Conditioner Bars:

Our hair conditioner bars will be just fine 99.9% of the time as they need moisture to fully dissolve and be ready to apply to your hair. However, the heat of summer shipping can cause them to soften and “squish” a bit in transit. They will return to fully solid in about 30 minutes of room temperature.

Want to melt your conditioner bar on purpose? It makes an amazing hair mask! Here’s how:
Use as a Deep Conditioning Hair Mask: Melt a small portion of the Conditioner Bar over low heat. Once warmed and melted, whisk in 2-3 teaspoons of water to create a creamy hair mask. Apply to wet hair and wash out after 30 minutes. If you have extra dry hair, you can add a dab of our Whipped Body Butter into the recipe.

For Mouthwash Crystals:

Mouthwash crystals are sensitive to temperature and humidity. They may solidify in hot or high moisture environments. Our compostable pouches are suitable for retaining their intended consistency in average room-temperature environments, but they are not plastic! This means they are a bit more sensitive when shipping and storing.

If your Mouthwash Crystals solidify, yes, you can bang them apart with a mallet. We highly recommend that you use this opportunity to work out some frustrations and enjoy smashing them apart!

To prevent your Mouthwash Crystals from solidifying: store in an air-tight container and avoid excessive humidity and heat. We recommend storing a 1-2 week portion in a 2oz mason jar with a sealed lid (we use the silicon lids from Mason Jar Lifestyle, our favorite local mason jar company!)

Our soaps are packaged in organic cotton bags. You can reuse them as tea bags (please wash them first though!), or soap sacks. To use as a soap sack, place the small ends of soap bars into the sack until you have a small stash. Then, wash with the soap sack as a washcloth. They also make great garden soap sacks (just hang from the spigot).

Our Mouthwash Crystals are packaged in kraft eco pouches, lined with PLA (Polylactic Acid), a bioplastic material made from renewable resources such as corn and sugar with an ALOX (Aluminium Oxide) Coating. ALOX is compostable and helps keep the crystals dry.

Our Tooth Suds and other boxes are made from 100% recycled content, are 100% recyclable and compostable.

Conditioner bars, facial powders, and travel bars are packaged in glassine bags. Glassine is a smooth and glossy paper that’s made air, water, and grease resistant through a process called supercalendering.  They are not waxed or chemically-finished during manufacturing and are fully recyclable, compostable, and biodegradable.

Our hair tea is packaged in biodegradable cello bags made from wood cellulose fibers sourced with sustainable forestry principles, certified biodegradable, compostable, and made carbon zero. Each bag meets ASTM D6400, EN13432 standards for CA and other states.

Our labels are printed on recycled label stock.

Herbal salves are packaged in a reusable and recyclable metal tins.

We ship with sustainable materials too!

  • Smaller orders are shipped in sustainable paper padded envelopes and boxes (made from recycled materials, recyclable & naturally biodegradable). If more suitable, your package might arrive in one of our reusable, recycled, and recyclable plastic pouches too.
  • Larger orders ship in USPS flat rate packages that meet Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) or Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification standards. And, they are fully recyclable (including the padded shipping mailers which are made from #4 recyclable plastic).

Body butter is a great way to lock in moisture for your entire body. We have customers who use it every day on hair, face, and all the way to their toes! Simply scoop out a small amount of the butter, warm in your hands, and apply.

  • Use it after your shower and you just might find that you do not need to reapply throughout the day, as you would with a typical lotion.
  • Apply a pea sized amount of body butter to ends of your hair for a super intense conditioner.
  • Body butter is a wonderful moisturizer for your face but only use a tiny dab.
  • Rub an ample amount on dry feet, cover with socks and wake up with supple moisturized toes.

We jar our body butter when it’s whipped, silky, and smooth. But, if your jar was left in the car on a hot day, it could have melted and developed a grainy texture. The good news is that it’s perfectly safe to use and won’t affect the performance of the body butter.

The graininess (or butter bumps) are a result of different fatty acids cooling down at different temperatures. If you want to restore the wonderful whipped texture you can re-whip your body butter. This post explains how to restore your body butter to its silky smooth whipped state.

Handmade Soap

Yes! After washing or brushing your teeth, any bacterium that was present on either the soap or your hands/teeth is washed down the drain.

Yes!

When you use a bar of soap (or Tooth Suds) the oil attracting end of the soap molecule picks up the grease and oils on your skin. When you rinse, the water-attracting end of the soap molecule follows the water, rinsing the soap and any impurities down the drain when you wash it off (or spit it out).

After washing or brushing your teeth, any bacterium that was present on either the soap or your hands/teeth is washed down the drain.

Here’s more information about why soap isn’t dirty and perfectly hygienic and sanitary.

Soap ages, like a fine wine, but we recommend that you use your soap within one year of purchase. When a bar of our soap ages:

  • the aroma from essential oils will fade (after about 3-months)
  • the plant-based colors may fade (some within 6-months, other after a few years)
  • the lather will become creamier and thicker
  • the soap will become milder

The scent and color changes on our sample bars will be more noticable and occur sooner than the full sized bars. This is due to an increased percentage of the surface area being exposed to air.

My favorite bar of soap is the first bar I ever made. My daughters and I spent months researching and collecting tools and materials with my husband. Our first soap then took us a full day to mix by hand. I’ll cherish those memories for the rest of my life. I still have a bar from that first batch and I use is once a year on my daughter’s birthday.

Kandra, Owner and Soap Maker, Alō Goods

Short Answer: It depends on how often it’s used, and if it’s kept dry between uses.

When used at the sink for handwashing, a bar of our handmade soap will last 4-6 weeks or more. This assumes that the bar will placed on a soap dish that allows the water to drain away from the soap, giving the soap a chance to dry out between uses. You can read more on extening the life of your soap here.

When used in the shower, a bar of soap will typically last between 3-5 weeks. This assumes that the bar is exposed to water longer than at the sink, and then multiple people are using the same bar to wash head to toe.

Compared to commercial “soaps”, natural soaps are normally softer as they retain their natural glycerin (commercial soap production removes the glycerine to sell as a separate product). Our soaps are also free from artificial hardening chemicals, synthetic waxes or free alkali.

No, there is no lye in our soap. However, all true soap is made through the saponification of oils with lye—either sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. Once saponified none of the lye remains, and the oils are turned into soap. You can read more how soap is made, cured, and cared for in these articles:

Alō products are made in a private kitchen, with clean and sterile equipment and quality ingredients. In fact, many of the ingredients are food grade…but please don’t eat your soap or body butter!
