Love chocolate? Bet you didn't know it makes for an amazing bar of soap as well as a nutritious snack.

I've been making DIY chocolate bars for a while now, and love them! They are filled with nutritious chocolate, coconut oil, and cocoa butter with just a touch of sweetness from a touch of honey. And it just so happens that these same ingredients make wonderful soap.

This limited edition batch of handmade soap was inspired by these tasty treats, and while the treats are not included with your order, you can make a batch of edible chocolates to enjoy before or after your scrumptious bath with the recipe below.

DIY Sugar-Free Chocolate Honey Treats

  • 1 part by weight coconut oil
  • 2 parts by weight honey
  • 3 parts by weight cocoa butter
  • 4 parts by weight unsweetened baking cocoa powder
  • Dash of vanilla
  • kitchen scale
  • double boiler (or microwave)
  • candy molds (or pour onto a lined cookie sheet and smash the finished chocolate into yummy bits)

  1. Measure coconut oil, honey, and cocoa butter into the top of a double boiler (I use 40g of coconut oil, but you can scale the recipe to your liking).
  2. Slowly heat until melted.
  3. Stir in cocoa powder
  4. Pour into molds and chill until hard.
  5. Enjoy!

Handmade Soap FAQs

Soap ages, like a fine wine, but we recommend that you use your soap within one year of purchase. When a bar of our soap ages:

  • the aroma from essential oils will fade (after about 3-months)
  • the plant-based colors may fade (some within 6-months, other after a few years)
  • the lather will become creamier and thicker
  • the soap will become milder

The scent and color changes on our sample bars will be more noticable and occur sooner than the full sized bars. This is due to an increased percentage of the surface area being exposed to air.

My favorite bar of soap is the first bar I ever made. My daughters and I spent months researching and collecting tools and materials with my husband. Our first soap then took us a full day to make. I’ll cherish those memories for the rest of my life. I still have a bar from that first batch and I use is once a year on my daughters birthday.

Short Answer: It depends on how often it’s used, and if it’s kept dry between uses.

When used at the sink for handwashing, a bar of our handmade soap will last 4-6 weeks or more. This assumes that the bar will placed on a soap dish that allows the water to drain away from the soap, giving the soap a chance to dry out between uses. You can read more on extening the life of your soap here.

When used in the shower, a bar of soap will typically last between 3-5 weeks. This assumes that the bar is exposed to water longer than at the sink, and then multiple people are using the same bar to wash head to toe.

Compared to commercial “soaps”, natural soaps are normally softer as they retain their natural glycerin (commercial soap production removes the glycerine to sell as a separate product). Our soaps are also free from artificial hardening chemicals, synthetic waxes or free alkali.

No, there is no lye in our soap. However, all true soap is made through the saponification of oils with lye—either sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. Once saponified none of the lye remains, and the oils are turned into soap. You can read more how soap is made, cured, and cared for in these articles:
