Once upon a time, my local yarn store was having a great sale on some lovely lace-weight yarn. But, alas, I didn’t have any specific pattern in mind. Having just knit up some infinity scarves as holiday presents for my sister and daughter, this was the perfect opportunity for me to take everything that I didn’t like from those patterns and make the perfect infinity scarf.

I wanted something that was very lightweight and had a feeling of floating on the clouds. The openwork lace pattern provides a lovely accent to any wardrobe and is designed to provide stability to the finished fabric. The pattern is knit in the round to make a lovely cowl/infinity scarf. This is a great project to work on at your knitting group, weekend knitting, or as a stash buster. One thing that I love about the pattern is how light-weight it is, which makes these infinity scarfs the perfect gifts for my family in warm sunny Arizona. I always want to knit for them, but they don’t seem to appreciate wool sweaters for some reason…

The pattern includes detailed instructions for this elegant six row repeating lace pattern. You’ll need an intermediate knitting skill, size 5 circular needles, and one skein (approximately 22 yards) of lace weight yarn (but feel free to keep on knitting to use up a full ball for stash busting!)

This pattern is great. I knitted it in 2 days. I like it because it’s airy and light. I was looking for something to knit just like this so I could knit in cotton, silk, or bamboo for a summer cowl. This is perfect for what I wanted.

I will tell you, I’m disappointed. Knit as described in the pattern…size 5 needles and a k then p row every several rows to tighten things up…makes for a much tighter scarf than is pictured. I think the author may have meant size 15 needles, but I am on vacation with only the size 5s, so can’t be sure. Perhaps you need the specific type of yarn shown, rather than a straight lave-weight yarn.

      Hi Ester –
Thank you for the feedback. Yes, size 5 is what I used to knit the pictured scarf. I ended up knitting two of them with that yarn on the size 5 needles, and a few others with some different yarns on a size 8 needle. Do you tend to knit on the tighter or looser side? As all yarn is different, I would suggest knitting with a larger needle if your yarn is producing a tight knit on the size 5.

      Happy knitting!
